Legoland - Part I

We headed down to Carlsbad to the LaCosta Resort for a few days with the idea that we'd go to Legoland one day and possibly just hang out and play in the Resort's pool the other. We decided last minute to add on an extra night to the start of our trip so we could get the drive out of the way Wednesday after work and then we'd have a full day Thursday to enjoy. Drive was long in that we hit traffic but ultimately it only took us 2 or so hours. We were all so happy to get here and get out of the car. We checked in and went to our room - which was really nice and spacious and laid out pretty well for what we need (one king bed and then a separate room with 2 queens and two bathrooms and a living room area). It was lacking fridge space - we just had the minifridge (which we emptied of its contents so we could put out contents in). Both boys were excited to check everything out... and then, even though it was close to 8PM, they were excited to go check out the (slightly!) heated pool. It was an awesome "family" pool that went up 3 feet deep at the deepest spot. The boys could stand up throughout the whole thing! They were really excited and it made me a lot less worried while they were in there (I still watched them though...). After a good 1/2 hour of swimming, both boys were really cold and it was getting late so we came in, ordered room service for J & I (the boys had a truck picnic on our drive down), got the boys into their PJs and then set them up with their DVD. We finally put them to bed around 10:15 (ugh) but they did go right to sleep pretty much.

They slept in until 7:15AM! We all got ready and then went to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Boys were excited about the idea of getting to eat anything (they had waffles, bacon and smoothies). Both boys kept saying they wanted to skip Legoland and just play in the pool. We talked them into going and trying it out and so finally w
e were off to Legoland. Bought our passes and then waited in line to get our pictures taken for our passes and finally we were actually "in" the park and ready to have fun. The boys were really excited by it all, especially since they are so into Lego's in general right now. Of course, they got sucked into the commercialism of it and wanted to go into every Lego store at the park and check the things out. We made our way to Mini
land and the boys were soooo excited. They loved all the detail and kept telling us that they really wanted that, or that, or just this one, Mom, or okay, that one and this one and that's all, this one too, etc. N said he was going to save up his money so he could buy the things.

Side note - no pictures. We brought the camera but forgot to put the battery in it.

We wound our way up to the Castle area. There wa
s a cool jungle gym area for the kids to play and climb, etc. They wanted to go in and so they played while we waited. Eventually, we told them it was time to go and find some rides. We found a roller coaster - S decided he wanted to go; N, not so much. J took S and said S got a little nervous once he was on but did really well. I was surprised at how little they wanted to do the rides. Maybe it was too much to take in and commit to a particular ride? We all four went on the slow boat ride and they enjoyed that. They went on a slide "ride" where they just came down a slide while sitting on a sack.

S really wanted to make sure we got home with enough time to swim before nap, so we decided we better go (it was Noon-ish at this point). J went up to buy some apple fries for them while I walked the boys back through Miniland. We met up with J at the entrance and headed back to the hotel. Boys were sooo excited to go back to the pool. We decided we'd order food poolside to keep things easy. The hotel kids' food has been horrible. We got the boys a grilled cheese sandwich and they didn't want to eat it - J tasted it and said it was made with cheesewiz or Velveeta or something like that and he wouldn't want to eat it either. Overall they've eaten horribly but I'm trying so hard to go with the flow. But it shows up sometimes - they've had a lot of gas, I'm sure they aren't getting enough protein so they are melting down faster, etc.

When we got to the room, the boys were SO ready to nap. They actually went right to sleep (in separate rooms) and napped for a good 2 hours. While they were napping, I went and got a pedicure at the spa, which was really nice.

Boys got up around 4:30 and we decided we'd try to squeeze in one extra hour at Legoland before it closed. So we tried to get everyone together and out the door and then we locked the card key in the room. J got a replacement but it didn't work and so we decided just to deal with when we got back. As we were finally leaving, we saw J's family walking up. How funny. They were meeting us at 6:30 but had gotten here really early. So we dropped the car back at valet, unloaded and after J got us a key that worked, we all changed into our suits and went back to the pool.

The kids had a great time playing with their nephew. Eventually, we got everyone out and headed to dinner at the hotel restaurant. To say it wound up being SLOW was an understatement. The boys were already getting pretty ripe but with all the waiting there was a lot of misbehaving. Once again, their food was not so great but the adult food was pretty good. I think the lesson is that we won't order off the kids' menu for them anymore.

J's family got ready and we walked them to their car. It was at this point that things went south pretty fast. The boys were so tired. There was a lot of yelling and tears and finally we got them into bed (no movie but a couple of stories to help them wind down) and they did eventually go to sleep. Not as fast as I would have expected given how exhausted they were.

Day one... done. Moving on to day two.
